ESB Computer Labs
How Can Students Log In to Lab Computers?
Undergraduate students can log into the computers in the ESB computer labs using their name and student ID:
- Username
- First 8 letters of their first, middle, and last name concatenated without space. For instance John Alexander McMaster would have the username
johnalex
- Password
- Capital S and the first 7 digits of their student ID. For instance, if their student ID is 987654321, the password is
S9876543
If these do not work (e.g., because the username would not be unique), the graduate TA has the ability to check a student’s login information manually:
- Open a terminal (on a Mac or on Linux) or access a SSH (secure shell) capable computer (e.g., Windows with PuTTY installed)
- Connect to
stat.ubc.ca
using SSH and the TA’s StatNet account.
On Mac or Linux this can be done byssh {STATNET_ACCOUNT_NAME}@stat.ubc.ca
and then enter the password when prompted. - At the command prompt, type
myid
. You will then be asked to enter the student ID. This will print the undergraduate student’s username and password.
How Do the Projectors Work?
The projector control panel is located at the right (south-west) corner of the room. The control panel is a touch screen and can be operated by anyone. If the screen is turned off, touch it once and it will be turned on automatically. If the projectors are off, there is a big button on the screen to turn them on. Go to your first labs early to become familiar with the UI of the control panel. Be patient with the system as the projectors usually require some time to warm up and respond. However, don’t be afraid to try out the control panel!
You can either plug in your own laptop (with HDMI or VGA) or use the instructor computer just next to the control panel. The control panel gives you options what input to use. Again, come early the first few times to make sure the connection works!
If you need help with the panel, see if another TA is in the other lab and ask them for assistance. If nobody is in the other lab, there is a phone number noted next to the control panel that you can call for assistance.
Department Infrastructure
The department’s mail room has a printer (hp5) and a photocopying machine. You need a code to use the photocopying machine. If some of your TA duties require you to do photocopying, you will be assigned a code.
You can access one of the computers in the mail room using your Stat account and print your document. Alternatively, you can add a StatNet printers to your personal computer. Instructions can be found on the Department’s internal FAQ.
